La disparition du fondateur de Radio Caroline, Ronan O’Rahilly n’a semble-t-il rien à voir avec le coronavirus. Mais en ces temps, dorénavant reculés, de confinement musical des gens comme lui et le Président Rosko nous ont permis de respirer un autre air.
Il faut se rappeler à quel point les ondes françaises étaient alors encombrées d’affreuses guy-luxeries. Toute la variété moisie made in France, largement produite par des rescapés de la période Yé-Yé, squattait les programmes TV et radio de ce côté de la Manche. Pas moyen d’accéder à la formidable explosion musicale qui avait cours outre-manche ou aux USA.
Je ne sais plus si c’était Radio Caroline dont j’arrivais, le soir, à capter, au milieu des crachotements, les fantastiques nouveautés anglo-saxonnes, ou une plus triviale antenne de la BBC (?) mais ce qui est sûr c’est que ces gens (et quelques autres comme Michel Lancelot) m’ont donné envie de faire de la radio dès que cela fut rendu possible…une bonne dizaine d’années plus tard (!).
En décembre 1967 le groupe britannique The Who sort un album en forme d’hommage aux radios pirates et à Radio Caroline en particulier : « The Who Sell Out ».
Probablement leur meilleur album.

You have to remember how crowded the French airwaves were at the time with awful guy-luxeries. All the mouldy variety made in France, largely produced by survivors of the Yé-Yé period, was squatting on TV and radio programmes on this side of the Channel. There was no way of getting access to the tremendous musical explosion that was going on across the Channel or in the USA.
I don’t know if it was Radio Caroline, whose fantastic new Anglo-Saxon programmes I could pick up in the evening, amidst the sputtering noise, or a more trivial BBC antenna (?) but what is certain is that these people (and a few others like Michel Lancelot) made me want to go into radio as soon as it was made possible…a good ten years later (!).
